The purpose - to establish the frequency and spectrum of mutations during growing the immature embryos on the medium with ethyl methanesulfonate and identifying characteristics of inheritance of mutant traits in sunflower. The method of research - experimental laboratory and field research, analytical and statistical and mathematical analysis. The final frequency of mutations in M2 generation was 4,8-6,2% depending on the genotype at the EMS concentration of 0.01%. The spectrum of mutations included the mutations of chlorophyll deficiency, mutations of true leave, stem and head. Smaller concentrations of EMS were ineffective. Most of mutant traits were recessive and monogenically controlled. It was revealed that in the genetic control of "fan leaf venation" trait two nonallelic genes with complementary type of interaction were involved, and double recessive homozygote had its own expression. As a result of the research the technique of expanding the genetic variability in sunflower using cultivation of immature embryos on a medium with a mutagen was developed for the first time. Area of implementation - biotechnological divisions in breeding institutions of different ownership.
