Twenty species of 6 families are included to the Red data book of Ukraine. Most of the species (16) belong to the species of open landscapes, other - 4 to forests and mountains. Concerning requirements for their conservation these species could be divided to those who need preservance of pristine steppes (Sicista and Ellobius) and those who are dependant on the human activities (agriculture and pasture: Cricetus, Spermophilus, Allactaga). Aim of the work is to clarify the taxonomy of the rare and endangered rodents of Ukraine; identify distribution and numbers of some model species at some problematic regions of Ukraine; identify levels of between and inner group diversity in model species. Report summarizes results of the field studies of the distribution of rodents that were collected by the authors during 2004-2014. We proved that current regime in the nature reserves could not help to survive local population of hamsters, sousliks and jerboa. We found new localtites of Ellobius in Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizha regions on both sides of the River Dnieper. We come to the conclusion that it is important to increase the area of steppe reserves and include to them areas with different anthropogenic pressure. In the action plans of the protected areas it is required to consider the presence of different rare rodents and thus it could include (with adequate scientific proof) absolute reservation, hay collection, controlled burning of grass, moderate pasturing of semi-wild and wild large animals. Description of craniometrical variability helps to identify species and thus better understand their modern and past distribution. Also it is important to divide variability between species and ages. We have chosen Spalax as a model group (Spalacidae: Spalacinae). Their morphology of body and skull is strongly connected to underground life. We made a multidimensoinal analyzes of cranyometric diversity of mole rats in Ukraine. We identified that the changes with age are the same in both linages of Spalax and Nannospalax that divided in late Miocene. Only Nannospalax leucodon is different while all other have very little differences. We found that nasal bones has the strongest differences between different species. Report on the 24 pages, 6 fig., 3 tables, 19 references.
