Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 The study was conducted with a view to further explore ways to enhance the quality of joints obtained by explosion welding. As it's known, the joint obtained by explosion welding generated by the high-speed collision of surfaces of plates or tubes. Practically the distance to get the desired speed impact is provided by gap in the range of 0.5...20 mm. It is obvious that when the process makes a backlash of air, it is heated up considerably (up to temperatures of several thousand degrees). This affects the forming joint. To solve these problems in the 1970 's there were attempts to perform explosion welding in a vacuum. However, the further development of these studies were not conducted. Researchers and manufacturers focused on other areas to improve the quality of bimetals. The authors of the report provides an overview of defects in welded joints, where air in the gap is responsible for them. It is also shown that all major theories which describe the explosion welding process does not take into account the presence of air in the gap. In the experimental work it is demonstrated and tested a number of technological schemes of realization of explosion welding under reduced air pressure in the gap (approx. 0.05 bar). Using the developments, the authors of the project received a number of samples, welded with vacuumed gap and without one with the same welding parameters. Study of properties of several joints was made primarily by the method of optical metallography. It is shown that for small samples of bimetallic plates there is a tendency to reduce the number of unwanted structures during vacuuming the gap. The greatest advantages of vacuuming is for internal cladding tubes, where the expiration of excess air explosion welding is possible only through the free edge. It can be can clearly argue that when the internal cladding tubes longer than 300 mm vacuuming is necessary.
