Such a pronounced effect of the landomycin A and selenomethionine is due to their combined effect on the cellular glutathione system, which results in the rapid exhaustion of the cellular pool of reduced glutathione and subsequent induction of mitochondrial apoptosis, which enhances the effect of this anti-tumor antibiotic. This indicates significant prospects for the use of LA in combination with selenomethionine as a second line defense drug in the treatment of drug-resistant tumors.
