Analysis of the MSFD and other framework documents, already existing and being developed by the EU countries, was carried out; concept and strategy of establishing of modern integrated monitoring system were developed for assessment of marine environment state in the Ukrainian part of the Black Sea. Based on the results of field studies and observations of hydrological, hydrophysical, hydrochemical and other characteristics of the Zmiinyi Island coastal waters Initial Assessment of state and long-term changes in quality of marine environment and biodiversity in the Zmiinyi Island coastal waters; priority directions of development of the future integrated monitoring programme were determined for the marine environment state assessment in line with the MFSD. Pilot programme of monitoring was elaborated to assess the state of marine environment in accordance with the MFSD; the programme was tested on the Research Station "Zmiinyi Island". The experience of experimental studies was generalized, scientific and methodological recommendations on establishing of modern regional integrated maritime monitoring system were worked out. Effective work of the Research Station was organized with the aim of receiving the new knowledge and introduction of new methods, with the help of which the state of the island and the unique coastal ecosystem will be controlled.
