Kholodny Institute of Botany NASU popup.description2 Ultrastructure of epidermal cells and palisade parenchyma cells of the floating and submerged leaves of Nuphar lutea and Nymphaea alba that grow at the ponds with different water trophicity was discovered. Significant differences in the photosynthetic apparatus ultrastructure of the floating and submerged leaves of Nuphar lutea and Nymphaea alba were elucidated. But in the same time interspecies distinctions were minor. Ultrastructure of mesophyll cells chloroplasts of submerged leaves has clear differences from chloroplasts of floating leaves: they have bigger size, more thylakoids in grana and bigger partial volumes of photosynthetic membranes. Interspecies distinctions consisted in lesser square of the granal thylakoids of N. lutea floating leaves and the stromal thylakoids of N. lutea submerged leaves in comparison with N. alba. While differences in amount, size, configuration and ultrastructure of hydropotens, which placed on the lower side of floating and submerged leaves, were investigated. By the structure hydropotens are the simple secretory salt glands. It hypothesized that efficiency of N. alba hydropotens functioning was lower than in N. lutea. It supposed that hydropotens could be a link which connects adaptation possibilities of these heterophyllous plants with ponds condition and could explain ecology limitations in N. alba distribution.
