The ecological and geochemical factors causing the chemical elements to enter the atmosphere, to precipitate on the surface and to be absorbed by mosses were determined using the method of factor analysis. The spatial distribution and temporal trends of atmospheric pollution of the investigated territory by heavy metals over the past 20 years have been established. The results obtained were submitted to the Coordination Center of the ICP Vegetation International Cooperative Program for final generalization and compilation of the Atlas of Atmospheric Deposition of Heavy Metals in Europe in order to inform the international policy structures on the effectiveness of air pollution control under the UN Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution Transport (LRTAP Convention) and for elaboration of the institutional arrangements aimed at improving of air quality throughout Europe.
