Magnesium based alloys as electrochemical current sources were also studied. A series of multi-component alloys was synthesized in order to improve the hydrogen absorption characteristics of magnesium and its dual compounds. As part of this project, a number of intermetallic compounds which belongs to RE-Mg-Ni system have been studied. New intermetallic compounds of AB2-type with Laves structure and AB3-type with a structure of PuNi3 were synthesized, their hydrogen sorption-desorption properties were investigated, and electrochemical hydrogenation was carried out. The low formation enthalpy suggests that the hydrides of AB3 compound can be used as an effective material for a negative electrode of nickel-metal hydride batteries. However, due to the high corrosion activity of magnesium alloys during cycling, the capacity of the MG-electrode decreases rather quickly. The alloys were synthesized from Mg powder and powdered RE-Ni intermetallic compound obtained by electric arc melting. After that the powder was sintered at 450 oC for 8 hours in argon. The charge-discharge characteristics of LaNi3 compound were electrochemically investigated after hydrogenation from the gas phase. The structure of the starting (La,Mg)3Ni9 intremetallics and their hydrides was studied by XRD analysis. In contrast to the corresponding binary RE-Ni3 intermetallics, the new Mg-containing compounds are resistant to hydrogen-induced amorphization-disproportionation which allows them to be used as hydrogen accumulators or electrode materials.
