It is found that the horseshoe vortex generated in front of a bridge pier is the main factor of bottom erosion around the pier. The active scour countermeasures aimed at changing the vortical flow pattern near the bridge pear are discussed. A numerical simulation of morphological processes on the bottom of natural reservoirs caused by evolution of large sand quarries is performed.
