Research goal is to determine the optical characteristics of polarization gratings recorded in new azobenzene based materials; to analyze the suitability of these materials for applications in dynamic holography and design of optical diffraction elements. Research methods: the experiment with a standard setup of polarization holography have been performed (holographic recording of polarization gratings was carried out, their optical characteristics have been determined); the matrix polarization analysis of the diffracted light field was used for the theoretical evaluation of the phase modulation of the recorded polarization gratings and the induced birefringence. On the basis of experimental data, the value of the induced birefringence, which is photoinduced in samples of azobenzene molecular glasses tPh-DR1 and tPh-pMR by a laser beam with a wavelength of 532 nm, is calculated. Polarization gratings were recorded in available samples of tPh-DR1 and tPh-pMR azobenzene molecular glasses for different types of recording beams polarization. Characterization of the obtained polarization gratings is carried out, in particular, the diffraction efficiency and angle selectivity of these gratings are determined. The recording of polarization gratings in samples of azobenzene molecular glasses tPh-pMR, which were made in the form of a sandwich, was investigated. During the holographic recording, only anisotropic grating is formed in such samples, and the surface relief grating is absent. In these samples, due to self-diffraction on the anisotropic grating, a coherent amplification of one of the recording beams was made.
