The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of montmorillonite clay and thermally expanded graphite on the thermal and fire protective properties of nanocomposites of polymers in the intumescent coating of ammonium polyphosphate / melamine / pentaerythrite / polymer (nanocomposite). Research methods are IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure, physicochemical and thermal properties of polymers and nanocomposites prepared from copolymers of ethylene with vinylacetate, styrene with butylacrylate, epoxy resin and nanomaterials - montmorillonite nanoclay, thermally expanded graphite have been investigated. It has been found that the simultaneous presence of nanoclay and nanographite in a hybrid nanocomposite demonstrates a synergistic action in the intumescent system: an intumescent coating, which contains hybrid nanocomposites in its composition, provides an increase in the fire resistance of the metal by almost 20% compared with the coating with conventional nanocomposites - polymer-nanoclay or polymer-nano-graphite. Hybrid nanocomposite epoxy-montmorillonite-graphite is defined as the most promising polymeric component of intumescent coating. On the basis of the obtained results, an intumescent basis of fire protective paint for steel structures was developed, which can be applied to increase the fire resistance of metal in the conditions of a hydrocarbon fire.
