The basics were studied on the natural background and the best samples were isolated (52.1%). The strength (power) of the root system was studied by measuring the resistance of the root system to its forced vertical withdrawal from the soil using the "Avox" device. Significant excess of the investigated feature, in comparison with the standards, in the selected best lines ranged from 35.6% to 277.0%, and in the selected best hybrids - from 7.3% to 33.3%. According to the results of the research, a working collection of the best self-pollinated lines (20 samples) with high durability of the root system was obtained, which is recommended for the synthesis of new hybrids with high resistance to western corn root beetle Diabrotica virgifera virgifera Le Conte. The obtained research results are used in breeding research on corn.
