The purpose - to create starting material of common grain bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) adapted to the conditions of the eastern forest-steppe of Ukraine, with high performance and seed quality, suitable for mechanized harvesting. Study methods - hybridization, mutagenesis, introduction, selection; weighing; field and laboratory assessments; statistical methods. As a result of performing project 13.00.01.74. PSh "Expansion of the Genetic Diversity of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) for the Breeding of Technological grain Varieties", 106 accessions of starting material (91 P. vulgaris L. accessions, 5 P. multiflorus Lam., accessions, 8 P. acutifolius A. Gray accessions and 2 P. lunatus L. accessions) were evaluated for the biochemical composition of seeds and nutritional characteristics. Twenty accessions with improved seed quality were selected. Four F1 hybrids were obtained, 67 F2 families were selected, 9 populations of the second generation (M2) mutant plants from five initial varieties treated in 2017 with supermutagen dimethyl sulfate at doses of 0.020% and 0.015 % (15-12; Raiduha, Premier, CDC Rosalee, Krynytsia) were obtained, and 96 mutant plants with useful breeding traits were identified. Among 94 bean lines generated by selection from spontaneous hybrids; 45 families were selected by economically valuable characteristics and suitability for mechanized harvesting (with high attachment of the lowest pod (23-12 cm), compact determinant bush, different pigmentation of the bean hull and 1000-seed weight). New accessions enriched bean collections and the database of the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine.
