The purpose of the study is the complex gemological physical, chemical and microscopic examination of precious organic materials. Research methods include the determination of diagnostic gemological characteristics, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, optical microscopy. The current information on precious organic materials world market has been systematized. Principles of corals classification as well as general issues of the terminology have been analyzed according to the latest proposals of The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO). The main types of precious corals, ivory, nacre are described in accordance with their commercial use. Information about treatment types and artificial products is generalized. Complex gemological study of corals, bones, mother-of-pearls and their substitutes is carried out, namely the determination of gemological characteristics, measurement of X-ray spectra, microscopic examination were fulfilled. Expert appraisal training guide of precious organic materials (coral, ivory, nacre) has been developed. The results can be used to solve a wide range of tasks of scientific gemmological examination and for improving the quality of education in gemological field.
