Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 Synthetic approaches to develop new contact-active antimicrobial polymer composites by surface chemical modification of engineering thermoplastic polymers: polyvinyl chloride, polycarbonate, polyethylene terephtalate, have been developed. Two different methods of modification of polyvinyl chloride have been used, which include covalent grafting-quaternization of 1-dodecylimidazole, as well as nucleophilic substitution of chlorine atoms by sodium aminohexanoate followed by ionic grafting of 1-dodecylpyridinium cations. Engineering polyesters have been modified by surface aminolysis with sodium aminohexanoate followed by ionic grafting of 1-dodecylpyridinium cations. Antimicrobial activity of polymer films comprising chemically grafted cationic biocides has been studied by contact method. The high activity of modified polymers against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) bacteria has been established. Thus, from 99.9 to 99.999% of tested microorganisms were killed after 24 hours contact of modified films with microbial suspension. Hydrophobic long-chain onium salts of heterocyclic structure, comprising 1,3-dialkylimidazolium, 1-alkylpyridinium, 2-alkylaminoimidazolinium cations and different anions such as tetrafluoroborate, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, dodecylbenzenesulfonate, dioctylsulfosuccinate, have been synthesized. The composite polymer films based on polyamide 11, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride and onium salts have been prepared. The ionic additives were found to have sufficient thermal stability to be melt processed with engineering thermoplastics. The modified polymer films showed high antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, as well as bacterial biofilms at the onium salt content of 3-5%. The results of spectrophotometric studies indicate excellent leaching resistance of onium salts from the polymer films into water medium (< 1% for 30 days).
