Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2  In the study of the blood of primary patients with stage I-II endometrial cancer (EC), an increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) was revealed with a simultaneous decrease in the content of sulfhydryl (SH-) groups, the activity of the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT), and an increase in the variability of the pro-antioxidant ratio (PAR) in comparison with relatively healthy individuals (control group). In the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of patients with EC were significantly increased the transmembrane potential (TMP) of mitochondria, the percentage of apoptotic cells, the spontaneous level of double-strand DNA breaks and chromosome aberrations, mainly due to chromatid-type aberrations, namely, deletions and exchanges. Test irradiation (TI; 0,5-3,0 Gy) of blood samples from patients with EC led to a dose-dependent increase in the intensity of LPS, the amount of SH-groups, an increase in PAR and the level of PBL apoptotic death. The yield of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in T-lymphocytes of patients with EC is approximated by linear-quadratic dose dependence with a predominance of the linear component. For radiation markers, the quadratic component prevailed. Incubation of blood with metformin (MF, 2 or 20 mM) led to an increase in CAT activity (more pronounced at 20 mM), the content of SH-groups (more pronounced at 2 mM), and normalization of PAR values depending on their initial level. At TI of blood, MF exhibited a protective effect on changes in the LPO intensity, content of SH-groups in plasma and the level of apoptosis of PBL in patients with EC.
