The object of the study is analyzes the normative documents governing the mining operations safety, in which metamorphism is characterized by indicators that don't correspond to the generally accepted definition of geological processes influence on changes in the composition and properties of coals. The research allowed developing a method for predicting the tendency of mine layers to endogenous fire hazard by using the direct indicators of coal metamorphic transformations. It is shown that the implementation of the method is based on the results of elemental, technical and petrographic analyzes of coals usage available in the technical documentation of coal enterprises (mines, open-pit mines, concentrating plants). It is noted that the investigated indicators will make possible to assess the state of the organic mass converted during metamorphic processes, which makes up the bulk of coal. The results of the approbation of the obtained compounds by independent examination are presented.
