The purpose of the work is to study the peculiarities of ethnic and national policy in Southern of Ukraine, which was conducted by the state during the twentieth century, on the national groups of the region. The research methodology is based on the use of the following methods: comparative and historical, systematik and structural, retrospective and specific analysis. The main areas of the Study: analysis of the impact of state ethnic and national policy during the twentieth century. to the national groups of the South of Ukraine with the help of achievements of domestic historical science and active use of archival material. The work is subdivided according to the problematic principle of presenting the material on Ukrainians, the largest national minorities and other national minorities as three separate parts. But during the analysis of the situation of each of the national groups, the chronological order of presentation of the material is preserved. The results of the scientibic work are generalized conclusions about the influence of Soviet national ethnic policy on the national groups of the region in the period under study. The main characteristic of this influence is the inconsistency of the Soviet national ethnic policy, its fluctuations in connection with the needs of the government. The study of the influence of Soviet national ethnic policy on the national groups of the region, as part of the previous stage of development of national ethnic features of Ukraine, helps to understand the present problems.
