The purpose of the study is to determine the leading tendencies, content and specificity of social and church transformations in Ukraine during the XX - XXI centuries. Methods of study – system and structural, historical-genetic, chronological, diachronic, retrospective, heuristic, statistical, biographical. Comparative, microhistorical, historical and anthropological approaches have been applied. New arrays of archival sources have been identified and included in scientific circulation. The method of studying confessional structures has been improved. The peculiarities and transformations of the structure of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine in the XIX-XXI centuries are determined. Changes in the religious consciousness of the Orthodox environment under the influence of political processes of the XIX - beginning of the XXI centuries are highlighted. The content of Ukrainian public opinion of 1917-1921 about the autocephaly of the church, which had resonance in the 21st century and was embodied in 2019, is revealed. The forms of Russian aggression in Ukraine in church spheres during 1919–1920 are characterized. Their commitment to restore indivisible Russian state was established. Changes in the eparchial network of the Ukrainian Synodic Church as a product of Soviet modernization have been observed.
