During the first stage of the project the following modern experimental methods were used: powder X-ray diffractometer; polarization optical microscopy; methods of atomic force and scanning probe microscopy; the theory of light propagation in absorbing / non-absorbing crystals was used as a basis for optical characterization of LCLC films; methods of spectral analysis, which ensured the elucidation of the relevant physical mechanisms and processes in the conditions of the required purity of the studied objects. The optical anisotropy Δn and its dependence on the temperature T, the concentration c, and the wavelength λ were measured for indicative samples of aqueous solutions of LCLC and the corresponding solid films. For light-absorbing dyes, we also measured the absorption anisotropy Δk (T, c, λ). Absorption data were used to determine the scalar parameter of the order LCLC and its temperature dependence. Thus, we have developed methods for constructing solid LCLC samples with predetermined and controlled properties and appropriate orientation. The obtained results are supposed to be used for development of practical recommendations and creation of physical bases for new electronic technologies, including for construction of prototypes of flexible sensor devices on the basis of self-ordered molecular films.
