Complex studies of multi-element and multilayer coatings based on nitrides and carbonitrides of Cr, Zr, Ti, Al, Hf, Nb, Si, V and Y before and after irradiation with ions of different energies are carried out. General regularities of change of chemical composition, formation of defect structure, including vacancies, clusters and dislocations, changes of structure and physical and mechanical properties of nanostructured multielement and multilayer coatings before and after irradiation with ions of different energies are obtained. Experimental and numerical studies have made it possible to describe in detail the defective state depending on the energy of the implanted ions, i.e. high energy up to 200 MeV (ion implantation dose from 5·10^11 to 5·10^13 ion/cm^2), low energy from 60 to 450-500 KeV (ion implantation dose from 5·10^11 to 5·10^13 ion/cm^2). The main experimental methods are scanning and transmission electron microscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, positron annihilation, indentation, scratch testing and the complex of numerical modelling.
