Progenitor cell cultures isolated from the myocardium of newborn mice have been shown to have better proliferative potential and contractile activity compared to cells isolated from adult animals. Cells from the atrial appendage differ in characteristics from cells from the ventricles. Troponin I expression was confirmed in cultures of myocardial cells with contractile activity. A minor CD117 population of cardiac stem cells was identified. Fibronectin and poly-D-lysine are necessary conditions for the formation of cardiospheres.
