MICROPLASTIC ON THE INTERFACE SURFACE OF WATER-AIR AND ITS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Microplastics, microorganisms, pathogens, biofilm, bacterionaiston The object of research is microplastic, that today is a serious environmental problem, the solution of which is devoted to many scientific studies. The purpose of the work is to analyze existing scientific data on the role of microplastics in the life of microorganisms in natural water bodies and determination of the direction of experimental studies on interaction of bacterioneuston with microplastics. Methods of research are analysis of scientific data on the role of microplastics in the life of microorganisms in natural water bodies. Most microplastics (for example, polyethylene, polypropylene) found in natural water bodies have a lower density than water. Therefore, they are concentrated in neuston near the water-air interface together with dissolved or colloidal natural organic matter, hydrophobic cells and bacterial spores. This can cause problems for the environment and public health, as floating micro- and nanoparticles of plastic can be covered with a biofilm of hydrophobic and sometimes pathogenic bacteria. Microplastic covered with biofilm is more attractive for consumption by aquatic inhabitants than pure microparticles of polymers, and this increases its negative impact. Therefore, the effect of even small amounts of such a pollutant on the aquatic environment must be taken into account because of its accumulation in the surface layer of water-air interface and their interaction with bacterioneuston. Microorganisms attached to the surface of the microplastic can interact with it, use it as a substrate for growth, change its properties and biodegrade. The study of microbial life on the surface of microplastic particles is one of the key topics for understanding their role in the environment.
