Karazin Kharkiv National University popup.description2 The aim of this work is to study the efficiency of the radiation shielding made of elements with high atomic number and low density for the spent fuel casks, as well as to develop a technique for minimization of the dose rates due to the optimal arrangement of spent fuel assemblies (SFA) with different levels of burnout and storage time with thermal loads taken into account. The object of the research are the fields of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) radiation during the passage of gamma quanta and neutrons of the shieldings with different element composition, density and geometry The subject of the research is the radiation shielding made of different materials with the same mass thickness, i.e. the same weight characteristics of the containers. To study the effect on the shielding properties of different materials for the thicknesses, which are similar to the characteristics of the shielding of transport containers "HI-STAR 190 UA", a model of shielding in the form of flat multilayer disks and a model of multilayer cylindrical shielding were developed by Monte Carlo method; the layers thickness and materials may vary. These models allow optimizing the thickness, materials and order of placement of the radiation shielding layers both for the gamma quanta with given energies and for the individual gamma quanta of SNF isotopes and neutrons . Databases of yields and spectral distributions of gamma quanta with energies ranging in accordance with those of long-lived SNF radionuclides after passing the shields made of Fe, Pb, U, UO 2 , were calculated and generated. A comparison of the efficiency of the shields made of heavy elements with those made of steel for different shields and energies of gamma quanta was performed. The specifics of the formation of gamma quanta and neutron emission spectra after their passing through Fe and Pb shields of the same mass thickness were determined.
