The purpose of the research is to study the genesis of the police struggle based on the study of archival materials, domestic and foreign historical and legal literature, legislation and other legal documents of the Russian Empire, USSR-USSR and independent Ukraine, as well as newly discovered archival materials. (general and detective) with professional crime in Ukraine in 1880-1917. The main directions and tasks of scientific research are: research of forms of activity of general and detective police: detective (search) and cognitive, their characteristics and signs; determination of the main methods of combating professional crime (secret agency, external surveillance, verbal interrogations, operative inspection of premises and terrain, perlustration of correspondence, raids, principles, etc.), their characteristics; study of the interaction of the detective police in the investigation of crimes of a general criminal nature with the general police, political detectives, railway gendarmerie, military counterintelligence, judicial and prosecutorial offices, forensic offices and criminal police of foreign countries.
