Some researchers describe the situation as diglossia, while others believe that the language variants of Modern Greek in Cyprus use transitional variants to create a linguistic continuum of variants that have their own core and periphery. The thesis is devoted to the analysis of the language situation within the Modern Greek language in the Greek southern part of the island of Cyprus. The focus is on such concepts as "Cypriot ethnolect of Modern Greek" and "Cypriot urban koine", which in recent decades have distinguished Greek and Cypriot researchers of the linguistic situation within the Modern Greek language in Cyprus, such as G. Babinotis, A. Arvaniti, M. Kariolemou, S. Moshonas, etc. The authors of the article make a brief digression into the history of Greek dialectology, in particular the history of the formation of the Cypriot dialect of the ancient Greek language and its subsequent formation. It has been demonstrated that in the last few decades in Cyprus there has been a transition of the language situation from digloss- to non-digloss. Regional variants of the Cypriot dialect of Modern Greek are gradually disappearing and receding into the background - the main place in the minds of native speakers is a new urban variant. The mixed urban code of communication reflects the transitional stage of the language situation from diglossic to monolingual. Such conclusions are dictated by the analysis of scientific works of Modern Greek and Cypriot researchers on this issue. The author of the article tries to systematize the main modern theories regarding the language situation in Cyprus in its Greek part.
