The principles of creating an economic theory of institutionalism (institutional economics) and its role in establishing norms and customs of behavior in society and enshrining them in the form of laws are considered. Domestic scholars in the field of land management in the theory of institutional economics define the place of land management as a process of consolidating social rules, norms, roles, statuses, brought to the system, able to act in the interests of social needs and economic environment. Legislative support of land management in the system of economic relations is analyzed. The formation of institutions in the conditions of the transitional stage of economic transformations in Ukraine is considered. It is determined that the Land Code of Ukraine and other legislative acts play a significant role in the formation of the existing institutional environment in the field of land relations. However, the expected result and consequences of institutional transformations in today's practice differ from the theoretical models established at the beginning of their adoption. It is established that the existing purpose of land management was defined in the early 2000s and today requires revision and definition of new principles, taking into account today's challenges The directions of improvement of the existing institutional environment are considered. It is established that the application of land management within the whole country should be based on solving the goals of sustainable development. Emphasis is placed on the need to revise regulations, types of land management documentation in the context of solving specific goals and objectives of sustainable development.
