The material, granulometric and mineral composition, authigenic mineral formation were studied; studies of bottom sediments are accompanied by determination of their total chemical composition. The taxonomic composition and ecological spectrum of siliceous organic remains from marine Quaternary bottom sediments have been determined. Paleoceanological and sedimentological processes in different parts of the shelf and interisland shallow water were characterized. New and updated preliminary analytical data on the material, particle size, mineral and chemical composition of bottom sediments in lakes were obtained, the taxonomic composition of organic bottom sediment remnants and sedimentation conditions of the shelf zone and lakes were specified and supplemented. For the first time, a significant number of formations with a high lead content were found in lake bottom sediments. The presence of heavy metals in the lake sediments suggests a possible anthropogenic route of introduction of these compounds and to record the effects in the area of the station. It was found that the significant difference in granulometric, mineral and chemical composition of lake bottom sediments reflects the diversity of sedimentation conditions due to microclimate, remoteness of islands from the shore or mainland, the composition of parent rocks, the presence and species composition of microflora and fauna and ornithogenic factor. The complex of lithological, mineralogical and paleontological studies and the analysis of sediments of the coastal shelf and lakes of the Argentine archipelago show the influence of various factors, including anthropogenic, on the natural environment in the region.
