The theoretical essence of key species with biodiversity in ecosystems is considered. Cenotic relationships are indicated for individual key species. Studies of key species in forest, wetland and aquatic ecosystems have shown that this role is claimed by representatives of various systematic and functional groups of animals. Each of these groups performs its inherent function. This is most evident at the level of the consortium - the elementary ecological system. The destruction of a consortium of key species leads to a cascade of consortium deaths and changes in the abiotic environment. From the specific data presented above, it follows that the conservation of key species is in fact the conservation of the entire pool of biodiversity in ecosystems, and ecosystems themselves. This suggests that ways of conserving ecosystems should be based on data on the role of key species in them. We are convinced that an in-depth study of the role of key species is now essential, both in the context of sustainable development and the conservation of biodiversity in general.
