The subject of the research is the method of formation and improvement of lexical skills and abilities during professionally-oriented foreign language teaching of students of non-language specialties of higher education. The purpose of the study is to theoretically substantiate, practical development and experimental testing of methods of formation and improvement of lexical skills and abilities, as well as to develop a set of exercises for teaching vocabulary-oriented vocabulary using modern multimedia technologies and authentic materials.To achieve the goal, to analyze the role of foreign language professional communicative competence in mastering the profession in the university used a comprehensive methodology that covers a system of correlated pedagogical research methods: theoretical methods - analysis of scientific linguistic, psychological and pedagogical, methodological literature on research problems; empirical methods - attendance and analysis of classes, testing, surveys. The theoretical significance of the study is: defining the principles of teaching professionally-oriented vocabulary for academic purposes; development of a nomenclature of skills and abilities to be formed in the process of learning professionally-oriented vocabulary for academic purposes; representation of criteria for selection of educational material for teaching professionally-oriented vocabulary for academic purposes. The results of the study and the conclusions can be used in the educational process in order to increase the level of foreign language competence of students, during the preparation of curricula and preparation of elective courses.
