The scientific achievements of scientists related to the classification of agricultural lands and the directions of their use according to their suitability for growing crops are considered. Foreign experience in land classification and zoning approaches is analyzed. It is determined that the categories of land in Ukraine are divided according to the main purpose. It was found that among the various categories, agricultural land has priority in the definition and should be provided primarily for agricultural use. It is established that the current classifier does not distinguish between the form of management and the type of land use. This issue can be traced to the example of agricultural land, in which case the purpose indicates the form of land management and land use, rather than regulating the direct use of land. The list of types of land use in the information of the State Land Cadastre (SCC) is systematized. Inconsistencies were found in the information of the SCC on the names and codes of the types of land use. The structure and content of the 4-level classifier of types of purpose of land plots, which allows to determine in more detail the method of permitted land use, as well as meets the current norms of the Land Code of Ukraine.
