The main objectives of Phase I were to assess the climatic features of surface runoff and analyze current scientific approaches to its modeling in the polar regions, including the Antarctic Peninsula and to adapt a regional Polar-WRF model with high resolution (<10 km) over the bio-microclimatology experimental ground on Argentine Islands. An analysis of about two dozen current publications, which to some extent deal with surface runoff in the polar regions, showed that most current research focuses on assessing the mass balance of glaciers in the past and future, ice lakes, sea ice and shelf glaciers and the impact of melting glaciers on sea level rise. Virtually all studies that estimate surface runoff focus only on the narrow coastal area of Antarctica. Only one publication found something similar to a study based on a previous version of the ERA-Interim reanalysis. Therefore, the use of data from the current ERA-5 reanalysis database for surface runoff estimates in the Antarctic Peninsula is undoubtedly novelty. The PolarWRF model has been set up for double down scaling from 9 km to 3 km and then down to 1 km centered over the Argentine Islands, and test model runs with two-moment parameterizations of microphysical processes have been performed.
