The purpose of the work is to investigate changes in the ecological state of the territories of mining activities, to establish the sources of pollution and to determine the amount of pollutants. Results and their novelty: A comprehensive analysis of the process of dissolution and leaching of rocks stored in landfills under the influence of atmospheric precipitation was made. The contribution of rock dumping to soil cover, underground and surface water pollution is analyzed. A long-term analysis of the quality of surface water was interpreted, on the basis of which the need to improve the methods of assessing the ecological state of water resources by taking into account the sectoral nature of the man-made load on the catchment area was revealed. The scientific novelty of the work: it was established that over time the chemical composition of the underground water that leaves the dump changes; it was established that as a result of the dissolution of ferruginous quartzites, the migration of dissolved substances into underground water takes place; the need to improve the methods of environmental assessment of the quality of surface water was revealed, taking into account what types of industries are developed within the water basin.
