The search for alternative sources of energy is a primary problem. Ethanol obtained by the bioconversion of renewable plant raw materials has a significant potential for the development of bioenergy and the development of technologies for the utilization of agricultural waste, the woodworking industry, and household waste. Effective conversion of xylose and L-arabinose is important for increasing ethanol production from lignocellulose. Gene-molecular methods were used to identify and engineer the genes that ensured the growth of O. polymorpha yeast on L-arabinose as the only carbon source and whose disruption led to an increased level of ethanol production from xylose and L-arabinose. The constructed vectors were introduced into the genome of the O. polymorpha strain with increased production of ethanol from xylose. It was established that the damage in the IRA1 gene has a positive effect on the alcoholic fermentation of xylose and L-arabinose in the yeast O. polymorpha. The obtained results are important for understanding the features of genetic control of xylose metabolism in the yeast O. rolymorpha and are considered as a promising platform for the development of new approaches to the construction of yeast strains and the fermentation process of lignocellulose to ethanol.
