Such settlements and territories have long been in need of special attention, especially after the adoption of the decentralization reform. Many Ukrainian rural settlements are characterized by population depopulation, a low opportunity to get a job, poverty, and a low level of possible access to social services. The purpose of the work was: to investigate changes in the number and population of the village network at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries in the conditions of the transformation of rural areas, the influence of globalization processes and decentralization reform, to develop a typology of rural areas and substantiate recommendations regarding the directions of its possible development in the process of spatial planning. Historical, geographical, cartographic and statistical methods are used in the research. In the course of the work, against the background of the analysis of changes in the organizational forms of management, changes in the demographic and social sphere of rural areas, migration and urbanization processes, features of the development of cultural heritage in rural areas were followed, and fundamental questions and methodological approaches to creating models of rural development were developed. A comprehensive approach to the analysis of many components affecting the development of rural areas formed a certain novelty of the study. According to the authors of the work, the main results of the study can be used in the implementation of the Recovery Plan of Ukraine, which was developed according to the decree of the President of Ukraine "Questions of the National Council for the Recovery of Ukraine from the Consequences of the War" (April 23, 2022).
