Registration Date 31-12-2023 Organization V.P. Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 New hydrophobic cationic biocides based on 1,3-dialkylimidazolium, 1-dodecylpyridinium, 2-dodecylaminoimidazolinium, N-dodecylguanidinium salts comprising oleate, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate, p-toluenesulfonate (TS), dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) and dioctylsulfosuccinate (DOSS) anions, have been synthesized. The structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, as well as IR spectroscopy. The samples of the protective coatings based on poly(vinyl chloride), poly(methyl methacrylate), commercial epoxy resin DER 331, alkyd (pentaphtalic) resin, and chlorovinyl resin, containing from 10 to 30 weight percent hydrophobic cationic biocides, have been prepared. The results of spectrophotometric studies indicate that cationic biocides comprising DBS anion have excellent water-leaching resistance from polymer coatings (less than 1% per 40 days). The anti-biofilm activity of protective coatings modified with cationic biocides has been studied. The coatings containing 16-20% biocidal additives inhibited microbial biofilms which were formed by gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa) bacterial strains, by 90-95% and 60-70%, respectively. Field tests of the resistance of protective coatings to biofouling in fresh water (Dnipro River) were conducted. The samples of modified coatings based on epoxy resin, as well as commercial paints PP-115 and XC-413, containing 16-20% cationic biocides 1-dodecylpyridinium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, 1,3-didodecylimidazolium p-toluenesulfonate, demonstrated high antifouling activity. In particular, after exposure of the experimental substrates in fresh water for 140 days, the amount of biomass attached to the surface of such coatings was 1–2 orders of magnitude lower compared to the control samples.
