The purpose of the work is to develop the most adequate and at the same time effective technologies for designing and assessing the technical condition of buildings and structures, taking into account the probabilistic nature of all the main factors that determine the reliability of the operation of buildings and structures. The research methods are field surveys of building structures and simulation of their operation under the influence of various loads with the help of universal software complexes. The work analyzes the methodological foundations of the construction of modern design norms, emphasizes some contradictions and shortcomings of their application in extreme calculation situations, in particular, in the assessment of the technical condition of buildings and structures. It is emphasized that the main reason for these contradictions and shortcomings lies in the probabilistic nature of external loads, properties of construction steels and physical wear and tear of structures during operation. From the above positions, the work examines the features of constructive solutions and operating conditions of latticed metal masts and towers, suggests methods of increasing the overall strength and rigidity of these structures in order to compensate for their physical wear and tear. The regulatory requirements of various countries regarding the necessity and methods of performing calculations of building structures for emergency loads, which can contribute to so-called progressive collapses, are analyzed.
