The wool radioactivity does not exceed the permissible norms for ɣ- and β-radiation. Poor protective properties of lanolin and sweat are due to low wax content, a decrease in esterified cholesterol and an increase in highest polarity lipids, as well as a high alkaline sweat level. Sulfur content in wool is the specific breed feature; it is the highest for the fine-wool, and the lowest for the coarse-wool breeds. It is also related to the breeding location. In most breeds, there was a positive correlation between the fiber fineness and strength, and a negative correlation between the total Sulfur content. The solubility of fibers in a urea-bisulfite and alkali solution is determined by the environmental influence on fibers of different structure and by the nutrition level. The fiber proteins are represented by three groups: proteins of intermediate filaments (IF) I and II types and keratin-associated proteins, which indicates their heterogeneity and may be a breed feature because of individual interbreed differences observed. We have established the breed characteristics of total lipid content in sheep wool. The amount of structural lipids is the smallest in the thinnest fibers, and it is the largest in the coarse ones, which is related to the fiber structure, especially the cuticle content. We have found the interbreed differences in the structural lipids’ composition connected with the environmental and nutritional factors. There was a negative correlation between the content of total lipids and the IF II proteins. Our results indicate the breed specifics of proteins and lipids content and ratio, which can be genetically determined, and therefore serve as appropriate markers within separate breed as well as breeds of the same fiber category.
