Until the 1980s, it was one of the estuaries of the North-Western Black Sea and had an active water exchange with the Black Sea. Then, by the decision of the government in 1979, the lake Sasyk was transformed into a fresh water reservoir with the aim of further using it for irrigation of agricultural lands within the framework of the planned Danube-Dnipro canal. Due to the hypersalinity of the bottom soils of the estuary, complete desalination was not achieved despite multiple changes in the water mass. After desalination in the lower part of the reservoir, the water remained salty in its middle part and in the upper part. Sasyk water turned out to be unsuitable for irrigation or other domestic use due to final salinity (2-4 ‰) and the content of undesirable additional components (suspension, heavy metal salts, pesticides, etc.) that came from the Danube. In addition, significant silting of the bottom occurred in Sasyk as a settling tank, and up to 2.5 million tons of salty bottom sediments were formed. But despite significant changes in ecosystems, the territory continues to perform an important ecological function and is important for flora and fauna. A detailed assessment of the past and present state of the Sasyk reservoir and analysis of changes in its ecosystems under the influence of anthropogenic and natural factors was provided in a previous report. The territory of the Sasyk reservoir is a VBU of international importance (Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of August 29, 2002 No. 1287), is included in the objects of the Emerald network (http://emerald.net.ua/), the upper reaches of the reservoir, with an area of 3,450 hectares , is included in the territory of the DBZ, without expropriation from land users (Decree of the President of Ukraine "On the expansion of the territory of the Danube Biosphere Reserve" No. 117 of 02.02.2004), which is approximately 7.7% of the total area of the DBZ.
