MIDDLE POLISSIA, MATERIAL CULTURE, TRADITIONAL CRAFT, WEAVING, HOMESPUN FACRICS The object of the research is weaving craft in the frames of historical-ethnographer region of Ukrainian Middle Polissia. The goal of the research project – analysis and generalization of traditional experience of people’s weaving of residents of Middle Polissia in 20 – beginning of 21 centuries and revealing of the tendencies of its development. Research methods – usage of systemic approach toward investigation of material and spiritual culture using chronological, typological, comparative methods, method of reconstruction and ethnolinguistic analysis. The research is based on the methods of field expedition work: observation, interviewing and photo fixation. In 2021–2023 the sources on the research topic were investigated (134 positions); arrangement of 40 hours of mostly authors’ field materials was done (such materials were collected on Middle Polissia during complex and thematic expeditions 1994–2021). Five sections of the study have been prepared: growing and processing of bast plants and other raw materials for weaving; spinning and weaving (spinning, warping and weaving), techniques of weaving; processing of fabric after production. Research of weaving craft in the frames of historical-ethnographical region of Ukrainian Middle Polissia with wide incorporation of new empirical material witnessed existence in this region of weaving tradition that has distinct technological, stylistic, ornamental and visual features. This field of people’s art still keeps continuity of the tradition and demonstrates brightly expressed ethnic unity. Presented research will contribute to preservation and return to public life of saved cultural heritage of the region affected with the Chornobyl catastrophe.
