Object of study: efficiency and dynamic behavior of vibro-impact nonlinear energy sinks, which together with the primary structure constitute strongly nonlinear discontinuous systems; dynamic behavior of thin elastic shells with shape imperfections; system response when its parameters and loading characteristics change. Description of research methodology: analysis and verification of created calculation schemes; creation of the differential motion equations; selection of numerical methods and software for their integration; development and analysis of optimization procedures; performing numerical experiments for testing obtained variants of optimal design with using nonlinear dynamics methods; using the finite elements method; using wavelet analysis; using the method of boundary integral equations. Theoretical and practical results: performed analysis of efficiency and dynamic behavior of vibro-impact nonlinear energy sinks depending on their parameters, parameters of the system and exciting force; recommendations for vibro-impact dampers are given; analysis of the influence of real and simulated shape defects on the dynamic behavior of thin elastic shells is presented. Novelty: new knowledge gained; new theoretical basis, new methodology and algorithms for the application of passive vibration control and protection of heavy structure for defense and civilian use were obtained; the results obtained have both scientific and economical and social effects.
