A significant difference in phenotypic plasticity of selected plant groups in terms of structural, physiological and biochemical characteristics during changes in the water regime was demonstrated. It was shown that the sensitivity of psammophytes to soil flooding is due to the inability to long-term structural and metabolic adaptation, primarily the formation of root aerenchyma. However, they have species-specific cellular and molecular mechanisms that ensure plant survival during several weeks of flooding. Structural changes include an increase in air cavities in the leaves, length and branching of trichomes, size of surface wax structures, content of silicon on the epidermal surface, changes in the ultrastructural organization of the mesophyll cells, which indicate restructuring of the photosynthetic apparatus, a decrease in respiratory activity and appearance of signs of autophagy. The systemic response of psammophytes to root hypoxia includes a decrease in the efficiency of photosynthesis, activation of signaling systems, defense mechanisms and anaerobic metabolism. The wide plasticity of the helophyte P. australis was shown to include formation of a developed aerenchyma of the schizogenic type, which is associated with a violation of the reticular organization of actin filaments, as well as changes in the leaf micromorphology, content and localization of lignin and silicon. The implementation of the project is related to the task of developing criteria for assessing the resistance of wild and agricultural plants to adverse changes in environmental factors.
