The work was carried out using standard and original methods. Thanks to the use of fluorescence microscopy, data on the morphology of a number of microscopic hydrobionts were obtained for the first time. The results of the study of biodiversity (zooplankton (Cyclopidae, Dinoflagellata), benthos (Turbellaria), periphyton (Bacillariophyta), macrophytes (Polypodiophyta, Magnoliophyta)) of floodplain ecosystems and the shelf zone of the Black Sea within Ukraine are summarized. Wetlands classified as such, in satisfactory or poor condition, are capable of playing a significant role as biodiversity reserves in conditions of human-transformed environments. Species-indicators of unfavorable ecological state and species-indicators of reference conditions of surface water masses of the Dnieper basin are proposed. Characteristic, rare and alien species are identified for different types of water bodies in a number of regions of Ukraine; the significance of floodplain water bodies of various origins as reserves of species diversity is analyzed. National and regional categories of vulnerability of higher aquatic plants are assessed. The ecological features of species causing "red tides" (Blixaea quinquecornis, Lingulodinium polyedra and Prorocentrum cordatum) are studied. The synonymy of Protoperidinium paulseni and P. knipowitschii has been proven, P. paulseni is one of the dominant species in the Odessa Bay. Scientifically based recommendations are proposed for the protection and preservation of the biota of the studied groups of hydrobionts, primarily their rare component. The data obtained can be used both for assessing the ecological state of wetlands of Ukraine of different ecological status, and for developing scientifically based recommendations for their protection and preservation.
