The object of research is the process of environmental pollution by chemicals. The purpose of the study is to develop a mechanism for a comprehensive assessment of the level of environmental pollution by chemicals. The paper reviews changes in the Ukrainian regulatory framework for chemical safety and chemicals management. The information on the main sources of chemicals entering the environment; the current state of the chemical industry sector; the impact of chemicals on the environment; the classes of chemicals that have the greatest impact on the environment; the main difficulties associated with monitoring the content of chemicals in the environment is structured and summarized. The author analyzes the main methodological approaches to assessing the level of pollution of certain environmental components by chemicals. A mechanism for a comprehensive assessment of the level of environmental pollution by chemicals has been developed, based on the calculation of complex indices of pollution of individual environmental components (atmospheric air, soil, water) with subsequent calculation of a generalized index; an algorithm for their calculation has been developed. Comprehensive indices of pollution of individual environmental components by chemicals for all regions of Ukraine are calculated as an example.
