The conditions for obtaining single-phase, highly-doped YAG:Sm3+ ceramics with a samarium ion content of ≤9 at.% were implemented. At higher concentrations, partial decomposition of the supersaturated substitutional solid solution occurs, forming a samarium-enriched impurity phase at the ceramic grain boundaries. This increases optical losses due to light scattering at the interfaces between the matrix and secondary phases, which have different refractive indices. A method for bonding of YAG:Sm3+ and YAG:Nd3+ single crystals and ceramics via diffusion bonding without applying external pressure was developed. It was demonstrated that modifying the bonding surfaces with silicon-containing compounds leads to the formation of a liquid phase at temperatures above 1400°C (SiO2–YAG eutectic), ensuring crystal monolithization and eliminating the physical boundary at the interface. Experimental samples of combined active elements (Sm3+:YAG/Nd3+:YAG/Sm3+:YAG) were fabricated. It was shown that optical losses at the interface of the combined element are virtually absent, two- and three-layer samples exhibit optical properties comparable to those of the starting single crystals.   Product Description popup.authors BALABANOV Anton E.
