Paton Elektric Welding Institute National Academy of scinces of Ukraine popup.description1 Conduct a set of scientific and technical studies to determine the possibility of using the existing infrastructure of the gas transmission system of Ukraine for transporting a mixture of natural gas with hydrogen, given that the main gas pipelines are welded structures popup.description2  The purpose of the work is to study the characteristic patterns of the influence of hydrogen degradation of pipe steels on the reliability and performance of welded elements of main pipelines when transporting mixtures of natural gas and green hydrogen. As part of the research work, mathematical models and high-performance computer programs were developed to predict the reliability of welded elements of main gas pipelines during design operation and repair under pressure during transportation of mixtures of green hydrogen and natural gas. Since the ultimate state of pipelines with significant hydrogen degradation of mechanical properties and accumulation of operational damage (corrosion, stress-corrosion) is determined by a complex of physical phenomena and the specifics of technological processes of installation and repair by welding, the models took into account the interrelated processes of the kinetics of temperature fields, the stress and structural state of the pipeline metal, as well as hydrogen diffusion. The problems of the design performance of welded sections of pipelines with varying degrees of hydrogen staining under static and cyclic loads are considered. An analysis of the possibilities of using the existing gas transportation system for transporting hydrogen gas mixtures of different compositions was conducted. An assessment of the limit state of pipelines with crack-like and corrosion operational defects was performed. Requirements for repair welding were developed, in particular, for multi-pass surfacing of local corrosion metal losses. Recommendations were formulated on the procedure for assessing the defectiveness of welded joints and the conditions for performing repair and restoration work without putting pipelines out of action.
