The work carried out a comprehensive assessment of the geoecological potential of landscape areas allocated according to the basin principle, and determined the spatial differentiation of the levels of geoecological potential: from below average (Psel-Vorsklinsky district) to above average (Esman-Klevensky district). A methodology for comprehensive assessment of water resources by water quality indicators and quantitative characteristics, implemented on the basis of the basin principle, was developed and tested. It was determined that the water resources of the Desna River basin within the Sumy region are characterized by the level of "above average", while the water resources of the Psel River basin are characterized by the "low" level of integral assessment. The analysis of the dynamics of the water content of the Sula, Vorskla, Psel and Seim rivers for 1979–2019 showed the presence of trends of low water and reduced runoff. The test methodology for assessing the ecological state of the river based on the visual assessment of small and medium-sized rivers was improved and tested on the example of rivers in the region. It was established that the majority of rivers have an ecological state from “still good” (Vorskla (village of Klimentovo)) to “satisfactory” (Vorskla, Psel, Sula, Boromlya, Romen, Okhtyrka, Ret’), however, within urbanized territories, areas of “unsatisfactory” (Romen, Okhtyrka, Strilka) and “extremely difficult” state (Strilka) are observed. The main groups of environmental problems were identified, and the consequences of pollution of the transboundary Seim river as a result of military aggression were analyzed. Recommendations for water protection measures have been developed, acts of ecological survey of rivers have been drawn up and appeals to authorities have been prepared.
