Litvinenko of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description1 The development of new scientifically substantiated approaches in mitigation of the consequences of technogenic pollution by use of energetic crops popup.description2 Monitoring of the condition and growth characteristics of the energy phytoremediator Hippophae rhamnoides was carried out during reclamation measures on technogenic, oil-contaminated soils. A predominant shoot-based capacity for autonomous vegetative reproduction and a preserved ability to form clumps were established. The highest growth dynamics were observed during the 4–6-year period. High soil-forming capacity was recorded: the thickness of the humus litter layer under sea buckthorn was about 1 cm after 3 years and 3–4 cm after 10 years. A threefold increase in total soil nitrogen content after 4 years was observed, accompanied by a reduction in soil toxicity and improvement of microbiological soil parameters. The fuel characteristics of Hippophae rhamnoides biomass were determined: calorific value of combustion 20.60 MJ/kg, moisture content of 40.68%, ash content of 1.40%, and heavy metal concentrations within the ENPlus regulatory limits, indicating its suitability for the production of solid fuel. A new method for the remediation of oil-contaminated soils involving Vicia faba and Avena sativa was developed, which increases the degree of soil restoration from oil by 7.8% for moderately and by 4.5% for heavily contaminated soils. Innovative schemes for phytoremediation of technogenically disturbed, oil-contaminated soils with the participation of grass crops are proposed: Melilotus officinalis / Melilotus albus (1:1), Panicum virgatum and Sorghum spp. in mono- and mixed crops, and the fuel characteristics of the obtained biomass are determined, indicating its suitability for the production of solid fuel.
