At the initial phase of the research project, the participants outlined and coordinated priority areas of work within the framework of the collective study and analyzed the cognitive potential and prospects for examining the formation of the information environment by the warring parties during the First and Second World Wars and the contemporary Russian–Ukrainian war. The implementation of Stage I of the research was based on modern theoretical and methodological approaches in historical studies. At the initial stage, the researchers, using source-studies methods (in particular, critical and heuristic methods, as well as content analysis), worked in state regional and sectoral archives. The processing of archival materials and historiography on the declared topic was carried out using structural-functional and comparative methods. Ultimately, this made it possible to identify key strategies for documenting the formation of new occupation authorities, the “image of the enemy,” frontline events, and other aspects. Considerable attention was devoted to the contemporary Russian–Ukrainian war. A systematic analysis and synthesis of existing works in Ukrainian scholarly literature devoted to Russian aggression against Ukraine were conducted. The use of general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, and modeling, as well as special historical approaches—historical-comparative, historical-genetic, historical-typological methods, and source criticism—made it possible to clarify the methodological foundations for studying Ukrainian–Russian relations through the prism of the informational and propagandistic component of Russia’s expansionist policy since 2014.
