Objects of research include natural and urban ecosystems; atmospheric, geological, and hydrological environments; personnel and population within the impact zone of the WWR-M research nuclear reactor (RNR); and locations where nuclear or other radioactive materials have been detected outside regulatory control. The purpose of this work is to enhance the efficiency and optimize measures aimed at minimizing negative impacts on the environment, human health, and population during decommissioning of nuclear and radiation facilities located within large urban areas, in particular the WWR-M RNR, and to improve the effectiveness of measures countering illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials. Research methods comprise experimental monitoring using highly sensitive α-, β-, and γ-spectrometry, mass spectrometry, dosimetry, and radiometry. Permissible release levels for nuclear facilities of the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine are substantiated in the document “Permissible Gaseous and Aerosol Releases of Nuclear Facilities of INR of NAS of Ukraine (Radiation-Hygienic Regulation of the I Group).” A Decommissioning Strategy and Concept have been developed as key documents justifying organizational, technical, and safety aspects, as well as establishing timelines and procedures for decommissioning of the WWR-M RNR. Nuclear forensic examinations of nuclear and other radioactive materials seized from illicit trafficking play a critical role in ensuring radiation safety of personnel, environment, and population, contributing to strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime and preventing potential use of such materials by terrorist groups for nuclear or radiological devices.
